Good dental health means more than going to the dentist every six months for a cleaning and checkup. Issues can arise between visits. You need to know how to recognize them in yourself and your children so you’ll know if you or your child should see your dentist right away. He (or she) can detect and evaluate emerging ailments. For problems that require additional attention, he can refer you to another medical professional for further diagnoses and treatment.
At the office of Perry L. Jeffries, DDS and Associates, PA, our skilled professionals are experts at diagnosing dental issues as well as providing the treatment needed to maintain excellent oral health.
BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR THESE SYMPTOMS
Tender and bleeding gums: Inflamed gums indicate worsening gum disease, which can lead to tooth decay and the loss of teeth. The bacteria that thrive in plaque can even lead to trouble elsewhere in the body, including the heart.
Eroding tooth enamel: It’s often a sign of acid reflux. Or, you may be unaware that your child is suffering from the eating disorder bulimia. Acids in bulimia-related vomit can cause sensitive teeth, overly dry lips, swollen salivary glands, mouth sores and dry mouth.
Jaw pain: It can be related to sinus problems, gum disease or a toothache. Also, it’s a common symptom of TMJ, which can be triggered by stress and bruxism (excessive teeth grinding or jaw clenching). Jaw pain can also be a sign that you’re having a heart attack. If your jaw hurts and you’re experiencing other common warnings of a heart attack, seek immediate medical attention.
New lumps, lesions, irregular patches of tissue: They could be as simple as a canker sore or irritation from braces, but your dentist should check them out right away. On the more serious side, they could signal oral cancer, which often presents itself as numbness, changes in how teeth fit together or a small white or red sore (especially one that won’t go away).
