Every time you shop for toothpaste, you’ve probably noticed that there are many brands, flavors, active ingredients and types whose elements are targeted at specific oral health conditions. So it’s no wonder that some children are allergic to one or more of the components.
When you want a pediatric dental practice that’s dedicated to providing superior personalized care, look no further than the office of Perry L. Jeffries, DDS and Associates, PA. We offer a warm and welcoming experience for all youngsters and their parents.
The culprits: Most allergens are connected to a toothpaste’s specific component. Some offenders: fluoride, peroxide, whitening agents, baking soda, gluten, flavorings and unique fragrances.
Allergy indications: Be suspicious if your child develops a rash around her (or his) mouth or has chapped lips, or her oral cavity burns or feels itchy. Be especially on the lookout for the most common allergic reaction to toothpaste. Called cheilitis, its main symptoms are lips that become extremely cracked and dry.
What to do: If your child has an allergic reaction to her toothpaste, switch her to another flavor or brand right away. The symptoms should clear up soon after. When you find out which ingredient is irritating her, there are many other brands and versions of toothpaste from which to choose. Children’s lips, gums and other oral tissues are more delicate than adults’ and teens’. Your daughter’s may simply be overly dainty. Choose a toothpaste whose packaging says “For Sensitive Teeth” or “For Relief From Sensitity.”
If the indicators continue or become severe, however, take her to a pedodontist right away to find out if the signs may signal something more concerning.
Take comfort in the fact that most toothpaste allergies are innocuous and tend to disappear after the offending toothpaste stops being used. Though there are many benefits to specialty toothpastes, and specific toothpastes meet specific needs, ask a pedodontist which kind of toothpaste is best for your child.
