Teething isn’t a pleasant period in the life of a baby or her (or his) parents. Most infants’ teeth start breaking through their gums between the ages of four and 6 months; all 20 will have erupted by the time they reach 3. Until then, though, the crying due to sore gums makes it tough for your little one to fall asleep and/or stay asleep at night. Luckily, there are ways to soothe her until she completes the transition.
Children should see a dentist after their first teeth break through and no later than right after their first birthday. We at the office of Perry L. Jeffries, DDS and Associates, PA know that preventive dental treatment will help our patients enjoy the benefits of a healthy and beautiful smile. Our comprehensive program of care is designed to protect your child’s teeth and reduce the risk of dental disease.
Teething becomes more intense at night because babies are more aware of their pain and discomfort when they don’t have distractions as they do during the day. The pain seems worse at night because exhausted infants are less able to cope with the discomfort.
Start by using a soft, dry cloth to clear away any excessive drool on her chin and face. It can lead to drool rash, a skin irritation that will disturb her sleep.
Gently massage her gums with a cool, wet washcloth. She can also chew on the washcloth with supervision.
A hard, rubber teething ring is a trusty resource for managing overnight teething. The ring massages her gums and lets her hone in on the areas that aggravate her the most.
Chill your daughter out with chunks of fruit chilled in your fridge. Clear the sugar from her gums before she falls back asleep. A cooled spoon will also soothe her discomfort.
On the opposite end of the temperature spectrum, a warm bath will calm and distract your daughter. Her body and mind will soon be transformed into a relaxed state and ready to return to bed.
Ask a pedodontist which over-the-counter drops and gels are safe and effective solutions for teething pain.
