Those who suffer from epilepsy know that it’s a challenge to manage and live with. Epilepsy is the fourth most common neurological disorder in the United States. Out of those 3.4 million people, 470,000 are children. Because this disease is complex and has a major impact on those struck with it, there’s a variety of medications to treat it. Unfortunately, though, many of those drugs can do quite a bit of damage to oral health.
The office of Perry L. Jeffries, DDS and Associates, PA knows how much of a strain it is to suffer with epilepsy and the dental disorders associated with it. If your child has epilepsy, we want to ease her (or his) burden by doing everything possible to control and improve the effects her medications have on her oral health.
Regrettably, epilepsy meds increase the risk of tooth decay, dry mouth and infections. The gum disease gingivitis is quite common. Gingivitis forms when plaque, which emanates toxins, builds up on teeth and inflames the adjoining gum tissue. The plaque can also weaken tooth enamel, insight periodontitis and alter her bite. A pedodontist will explain how specific tooth-brushing techniques can lessen gum inflammation. If the gums reach an extreme level of irritation, the pediatric dentist may prescribe an antibiotic or an antifungal medication.
Excellent oral hygiene practices will diminish the chances of infection, tooth decay and dry mouth in people taking medications for epilepsy. Your daughter must use dental floss and a water irrigator every day, and brush her teeth at least twice daily. During the occasions when she’s unable to floss or brush, she should rinse her mouth with water, which will dilute the acid in her mouth. Easy alterations in her oral routine can save her teeth.
While most people have dental cleanings every six months, it would be helpful to take your daughter every four months. And don’t hesitate to take her to her pedodontist if any type of problem pops up between visits.
