There’s no doubt that most kids love sweets. Halloween is one of their favorite holidays. And rarely will a child turn down cookies, ice cream and cake any time of year. All of those goodies are full of sugar, starch and acids, which are detrimental to dental health. That’s why sealants are so beneficial.
At the office of Perry L. Jeffries, DDS and Associates, PA, we pride ourselves on our impeccable skills and our expertise with pediatric patients. And because of our high standards, you and your child will feel confident that we work with top-rated equipment that’s designed for excellence and speed.
Children are born with four premolars (bicuspids). But between the ages of 6 and 12, their primary teeth (temporary or milk teeth) start to fall out and are replaced by their permanent (secondary) teeth. Molars are usually the first permanent teeth to appear (usually between ages 5 and 7) and they end up totaling 12, including wisdom teeth. While most youngsters eventually get their wisdom teeth extracted, sealing the remaining eight molars is a huge advantage in the fight again cavities and other maladies. Dental sealants are easy, quick and painless to apply. They’re also very cost-effective!
Dental sealants offer protection early in children’s lives. The surfaces of the back teeth include fissures and grooves that grind up food in preparation for digestion. The sealant cuts down on food’s ability to stick to enamel, transform into plaque, bacteria, acid and tartar, and become cavities, gingivitis and gum disease.
Having a pedodontist apply dental sealant to your child’s molars is the epitome of that famous adage by Ben Franklin: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Sealants work to prevent issues—cavities, gum disease, and excess wear and tear—from arising in the first place rather than to have to spend the time, expense and money to fix the problems down the road.
